Privacy policy

Give Better is a place to keep track of the people you give gifts to. That means we hold personal information about you and about them. This page says exactly what we collect, who can see it, and how to get rid of it.
The short version
- We collect what you type in: your email, your name, and the people, wishlists, dates and notes you add.
- We never sell or rent any of it, and we don’t show ads.
- Wishlists are private to the people you share them with. The person a list is about never sees who is buying what.
- We earn a commission when you buy through some product links. That tells the store a link came from us, nothing about who you are.
- You can delete your account from Settings at any time, and everything you own goes with it.
What we collect
Your account
Your email address (to sign you in and send you the emails described below), your name, your time zone, and, if you choose to set one, a password stored as a one-way hash. Signing in by email link means we never need to see a password at all.
The people you give to
Whatever you add about each person: their name, an optional photo and birth year, important dates, interests, their wishlist, links to lists they keep elsewhere, and private notes. These people have not agreed to anything with us, so we treat their information as yours to manage and keep it visible only to your household and the people you share it with.
Gift plans
Who is getting what, how much you spent, event guest lists, and Secret Santa draws. These are stored so your household can coordinate. They are hidden from the person the gift is for.
Share links and Secret Santa links
When someone opens a link you sent them, we store the time it was opened and anything they add through it. Someone claiming a gift through a link needs to sign in, so we know who claimed it; that is the point. We do not store the IP address of link visitors.
Clicks on product links
When you click a product link we record which item was clicked, when, which store it points to, and, if you are signed in, your account. We use this to understand which recommendations are useful. We do not pass your name, email or anything else to the store.
Link previews
When you paste a product link, our server fetches that page once to pick up its title, image and price. The store sees a request from us, not from you.
Technical logs
Our servers keep ordinary request logs, including IP addresses, for a short period to keep the service running and to spot abuse. We also use an error-reporting service that receives the technical details of failures, with personal information stripped before it is sent.
Children
Give Better is for adults. We do not knowingly create accounts for anyone under 13 and we never collect a child’s email address. Parents and other adults add children as people they give to, and manage those lists themselves. If you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will delete it.
Who can see what
Nothing you add is public. Visibility works like this:
- Your household (the people you invite) sees the people, lists, plans and notes the household owns.
- Other households you share a person with see that person’s wishlist and dates and the claims on it, but not your household’s private ideas or notes.
- The person a list is about, if they have the recipient link or an account, sees and edits their own list and dates. They never see claims, purchases, ideas added by givers, or notes about them.
- A Secret Santa participant sees the name and wishlist of the one person they drew, and their own list.
- Nobody else. We do not share personal information with advertisers or data brokers, and we do not sell it.
Email we send
Sign-in links, household invitations, Secret Santa assignments, and reminders before the dates you track. Reminders can be muted per date on the dashboard. We do not send marketing email and never put affiliate links in email.
Cookies
We set one cookie: a sign-in cookie that keeps you signed in for 30 days from your last visit. It is marked so that scripts in the page cannot read it. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies, and there is no cookie banner because there is nothing to opt out of.
Affiliate links
As an Amazon Associate, Give Better earns from qualifying purchases. Links to other stores may also pay us a commission through Sovrn Commerce. The link you click goes straight to the store with an identifier that credits us; the store sets its own cookies under its own privacy policy. Prices shown next to Amazon items are entered by hand and may be out of date, which is why they are labelled approximate.
Where it lives
The service runs on Render (servers in the United States), uploaded photos are stored with Cloudflare, and email is sent through Resend. Each of these processes data only on our behalf. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by those providers, and database backups are kept by Render.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. Expired sign-in links and old sessions are removed automatically. When you delete your account we delete your user record, your sessions, and the household you own with every person, list, plan and note in it. People who have their own account keep their own list. Backups age out within a few weeks.
Your choices
- Edit or delete any person, item, date or note yourself.
- Revoke any share link from the person’s Links tab; it stops working immediately.
- Sign out other devices from Settings.
- Delete your account from Settings. This cannot be undone.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct or delete something, by email. We answer within 30 days.
If you live in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or a US state with a privacy law, these are the rights those laws give you, and you can exercise all of them through the steps above. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will email the address on your account before the change takes effect. The date at the top is always the current version.
